Ichiko Aoba
Stunning, atmosphere-laden Japanese folk songs
Since her debut Kamisori Otome (2010), Japanese composer Ichiko Aoba has created her complete own neoclassical and nostalgic universe. Aoba manages to enchant many with an ethereal mix of folk, ambient and experimental sounds – often inspired by her dreams, nature and art. Her unfettered music has led to collaborations with the likes of Japanese legend Ryuichi Sakamoto, American sound artist Taylor Deupree, but also Canadian DIY-er Mac DeMarco and violinist Owen Pallett. Pallett compares her compositions with those of Burt Bacharach and admits: "I have never been as surprised by a musician as by Ichiko Aoba."
