XEXA
Príncipe Label Night met Nídia, DJ Danifox en XEXA
Surprisingly enough, the most innovative and global sounds-infected electronica/dance currently doesn’t come from hotspots like London, New York or Berlin, but rather from the restless suburbs of Lisbon. The prodigy’s name: Príncipe. The label has been active since 2011 and was labelled by Pitchfork as “One of the most exciting dance labels on earth”.
Spin once described the raw sound of Príncipe as “An ultra-vivid hybrid of grime” and FACT Magazine said “the sound of Lisbon ghettos”. “This is our grime'’ claimed Príncipe-pioneer DJ Marfox in turn. Their unique recipe? Contemporary techno and house are infused with African genres like the energetic kuduro (Angola), kizomba (Angola) and funaná (Cape Verde).
AB’s love for Príncipe is big. In 2017, Feeërieën organised a well-attended Príncipe-night with Nídia Minaj, DJ Marfox and DJ Nigga Fox. In 2018, we oiled the turntables for DJ Firmeza, DJ Nervoso and DJ Lycox. Signing up for this year: DJ Danifox and XEXA. Those wanting a good introduction to Príncipe can read this Pitchfork article and take a listen here.
XEXA (PT)
XEXA – a multidisciplinary, Afrofuturist artist with roots in São Tomé – is undoubtedly the odd one out at dancefloor-oriented Príncipe. Her debut Vibrações de Prata (loosely translated: silver vibrations) is bursting with ambient soundscapes, indebted to the musical Fourth World concept (read: ‘a unified primitive/futuristic sound combining features of world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques’) of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno.
This is a Liveurope concert: the first pan-European initiative supporting concert venues in their efforts to promote emerging European music.
