Nídia
Príncipe Label Night with Nídia, DJ Danifox and XEXA
Surprisingly enough, the most innovative and global sounds-infected electronica/dance currently doesn’t come from hotspots like London, New York or Berlin, but rather the restless suburbs of Lisbon. The prodigy’s name: Príncipe. The label has been active since 2011 and was labelled by Pitchfork as “One of the most exciting dance labels on earth”.
Spin once described the raw sound of Príncipe as “An ultra-vivid hybrid of grime” and FACT Magazine said “the sound of Lisbon ghettos”. “This is our grime'’ claimed Príncipe-pioneer DJ Marfox in turn. Their unique recipe? Contemporary techno and house are infused with African genres like the energetic kuduro (Angola), kizomba (Angola) and funaná (Cape Verde).
AB’s love for Príncipe is big. In 2017, Feeërieën organised a well-attended Príncipe-night with Nídia Minaj, DJ Marfox and DJ Nigga Fox. In 2018, we oiled the turntables for DJ Firmeza, DJ Nervoso and DJ Lycox. Signing up for this year: DJ Danifox and XEXA. Those wanting a good introduction to Príncipe can read this Pitchfork article and take a listen here.
Nídia (PT)
We once announced her under her nom de plume Nídia Minaj, a nod to her favourite rapper Nicki Minaj. Today she goes through life as Nídia. Her latest, now third, album 95 Mindjeres is a tribute to a group of 95 women who united in the ‘60s/’70s to fight for the freeing of Guinee-Bissau from Portuguese colonial rule. Boomkat: “Nídia braids lilting, West African rhythms into multicolored electronic prangs, sharpened to a knifepoint that cuts straight thru the heart.”
