Beirut x sextet x traditional Egyptian songs x improvised rock, free jazz and noise

Spotted at Le Guess Who? last year and immediately deemed impressive: SANAM (LB). A Lebanese sextet that mixes traditional Egyptian songs and Arabic poetry with improvised rock, free jazz and noise. At the helm: the impressive vocals of Sandy Chamoun as heard on their debut Aykathani Malakon. Noteworthy: both The Wire and Gilles Peterson are fans. The latter programmed them at We Out Here. Another fine quote: “SANAM’s music is something like a ritual, somewhere between a marriage and an exorcism”.

By the way, AB – in collaboration with Mophradat – will present another project with SANAM-frontwoman Sandy Chamoun in 2025. The SANAM concert at Feeërieën is already a nice introduction.
